غریزه مرگ فرویدی
One is a death drive and the other is a conservation or archive drive that is linked to the pleasure principle.
In this formulation, the archive affirms the past, present, and future; it preserves the records of the past and it embodies the promise of the present to the future.13 Derrida claims that what Freud posited as a death drive (or sometimes as a primal urge toward aggression and destruction) may also be characterized as "archive destroying."14 This death drive "not only incites for- getfulness, amnesia, the annihilation of memory. . . but also. . . the eradication. . . of. . . the archive, consignation, the documentary or monumental apparatus."15 According to Derrida, what is at work in the construction of the historical record is a negotiation between the death drive and the pleasure principle, between Thanatos and Eros.16
